Character Education

Character Education is a fundamental part of our curriculum. We believe that developing the 'whole child' and children leaving us as well-rounded individuals who demonstrate a range of positive character strengths is a very important part of primary education.

In the school year 2020-2021, we worked with Steve Harris (Wellbeing Education) to introduce Character Education to the staff and children.  His 'Route to Resilience' project, which is an evidence-based and a practical approach to supporting schools and families in their work developing the emotional wellbeing and resilience of children and young people, became the bedrock of our curriculum alongside Jigsaw (PSHE). We developed a list of those characteristics we felt were the most important to teach (we found this very hard - there are so many!) and these are taught and celebrated through assemblies, lessons and our weekly 'Stars of the Week' celebrations.

We have worked on the principles laid out by The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues and have created our school values and beliefs based around five core values (Kindness, Honesty, Empathy, Respect, Responsibility) and the other 23 character traits which we felt were important to teach.
